Charm reading is one of the oldest forms of divination
A folkloric practice similar to Cleromancy, (casting lots), and Osteomancy, (bone throwing), a charm reading involves casting some or all of a deck of charms that have been intentionally programmed by the reader. The reader then interprets how the charms fall based on signification, position, and relationship to the other charms.
Initially envisioned as a collection of only rocks, shells and bones, Mari has been developing this deck since 2019. It currently holds 43 charms; incorporating some of Mari’s conception, in addition to charms with like meanings from across folkloric tradition from their personal heritage (Mexican Father, Irish, German and British Mother), in order to create a truly comprehensive deck.
Mari currently lives and works in Baltimore, MD though frequently travels to Houston/Galveston, TX (where they are from), and New Orleans, LA (where they are going). They have strong familial and community ties in the Gulf region as well as the DMV
Throughout her lifetime, Mari’s mother Angela has practiced folkloric forms of ancestor veneration. Angela raised Mari to have and share awareness of these practices and knowledge of their ancestors and family history.
